Often yes, but the pass itself has changed. Eurail and Interrail merged on 9 September 2026: there is now a single Interrail pass, open to everyone regardless of nationality or where you live, instead of one pass for Europeans and another for visitors.
Whether it pays depends on your route. Reservations are usually optional on long-distance trains in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland, but in France, Italy and Spain inter-city trains are all-reserved like planes and you pay a reservation fee on top of the pass. Night trains always need a reservation — worth it anyway, because you save a night of accommodation.
Although that will depend on how fast you want to visit, normally you will need to allow an average of 2 days per destination. You also need to take into account the days you are traveling.

Europe Itinerary Planning Tips
Planning your Europe itinerary in advance is vital as it means, saving a lot of money. If you know the dates you are going to travel to Europe, you can then start booking some transport tickets, accommodation (with free cancelation is advisable) and apply for a visa if needed.
We recommend to book in advance specially when you are visiting Europe during the peak season, like summer or Christmas, otherwise, you might struggle finding decent accommodation or transport during the dates you need it.
Below you will find useful information to help you plan your trip successfully, let’s see what it is.
Entry rules: UK ETA, EES and ETIAS
This itinerary starts in London and then crosses into the Schengen area, so two different sets of rules apply. Neither of them existed when we first wrote this guide, and both catch people out.
The United Kingdom. Visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before they travel. It costs £20, it is valid for two years for stays of up to six months at a time, and every traveller needs their own, babies and children included. You apply on GOV.UK.
The Schengen area: the Entry/Exit System. The EES started on 12 October 2025 and has been fully operational in 29 European countries since 10 April 2026. The first time you cross the external border, your facial image, fingerprints and passport details are registered; from then on your entries and exits are recorded digitally and passports are no longer stamped. Allow extra time for that first crossing — on this route it is usually the Eurostar terminal at London St Pancras, where the French border check happens before you board.
The Schengen area: ETIAS. ETIAS is the travel authorisation that visa-exempt visitors will need for 30 European countries. It is not running yet: the European Union dropped its planned last-quarter-2026 date in July 2026 and the launch is now expected in 2027, with no official date yet. It will cost €20, it will be valid for three years or until your passport expires, and applicants under 18 or over 70 will not pay the fee. Check the official ETIAS site before you travel, and ignore any website that offers to sell you one today.
Best time to visit Europe
Europe is a destination that you can visit Europe all year round. There is always something going on in each season; if you decide to visit Europe during summer -peak season- chances are, sunny days, longer days, the perfect time to go to the beach, summer events… and a lot of visitors. If you go during the winter season, you can enjoy snow sports, Christmas Markets, northern lights, and parades.
There is always something worth to visit at any time of the year. Something you need to be aware of before traveling to Europe is, that there are big differences between the weather in the southern countries and the northern ones.
For example, during the summer season, temperatures can rise to thirty-something degrees in the southern countries. However, it is very unlikely to happen in the northern ones, where it can be very cold, even if it’s summer.
Having mentioned that, once you know the dates of your trip to Europe, you should check the temperatures and pack accordingly.
How to get to Europe.
The best way to get to Europe is by plane. Airports in Europe are quite modern and normally fast and easy to get to them.
For the recommended Europe itinerary, we are going to start in London. London has 6 major international airports, all of them have connections to the city center in an average time of 45 minutes.
It doesn’t matter which airport you choose to fly to, it depends on the price of your ticket, choose the cheapest, as it makes no difference.

How to move around in Europe.
By Plane
The fastest way to move around Europe is by plane. Sometimes, it is the only way to move from one point to the next one, so we recommend you, to plan in advance so you can find better deals. In Europe, there are many budget airlines, like Ryanair, Easyjet, Wizz Air… The only issue with these companies is that prices are lower than other companies, but they’ve got some limitations.
Bus
Traveling by bus is one of the cheapest way to move around in Europe (Not the fastest though)
Europe has magnific connections that will allow you to move by bus to most of the destinations we recommend in our Europe itinerary. Moving around by bus is perfect if you are traveling on budget and have time to do so. We recommend you to book your trips here to find the cheapest rates.
Train
Trains are always a good way to move around in Europe as there are an extensive rail network connecting lots of destinations.Traveling Europe by train is quite comfortable and less stressful than by plane, you just sit down and enjoy the views.
We recommend booking your tickets in advance if you know your dates, that way you will find cheaper tickets. The other option, if your dates are still open, is a rail pass. Since Eurail and Interrail merged on 9 September 2026 there is a single Interrail pass, open to everyone whatever your nationality. It is not a free-for-all, though: in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland you can usually just hop on, while in France, Italy and Spain the inter-city trains are all-reserved and you pay a reservation fee on top of the pass. On this itinerary that is most of the second half.
Car
One way to move around Europe is by renting a car. That way you can move around freely, without tight schedules. However, you will need to check your driving license and apply for a European or international driving license, in case yours is not valid.

In addittion to renting a car, you can also make use of BlablaCar a carpooling platform where you can share the trip with someone’s car.
Taxi
Taxis are a convenient way to move around in the cities in Europe when you want to save some time, as public transport sometimes can be slower. It is normally more expensive than public transport but you can find good deals using apps like Uber. We recommend you to download them on your phone so you can make use of them whenever you need them. One of the highlights of these apps is that you can check your trip before booking and they will give you the estimated price of your ride.

Choosing the right place to stay during your trip to Europe is really important. Here we have listed the best websites to find accommodation during your trip.
One thing about the hotels and hostels we recommend further down: we have taken the old nightly prices out of this guide. They were from 2019 and 2020 and not one of them is true any more. Every name links to its live listing, so what you see is today’s rate.
- Booking.com. Booking.com is one of the most trustworthy websites to book accommodation. Here you can find the best accommodation by checking the location, reviews, services, and price. Here you can also find flash offers with amazing discounts and, very important, some accommodation offer free cancellation, in case you change your plans.
- Agoda.com. Agoda.com is another website to find accommodation with the best deals. Here you can also check customer reviews, location, and services. We would recommend you to check both sites to find the best deals.
- Hostel World. With Hostel World you can find the best hostels all around the world. This is a great choice if you are traveling on a budget or if you’re a solo- traveler, as you will have the opportunity to meet lots of travelers in the hostels.
- Airbnb. Airbnb offers marvelous and unique accommodations mostly everywhere. From normal apartments to luxury treehouses in the woods, or stunning villas, even an unusual stay in a boat… The difference between Airbnb and other platforms is that the accommodation offered here, belongs to particulars, so you contact them directly through the app. Now you can also book top experiences with Airbnb.
- Couchsurfing. This platform offers you the opportunity to be hosted by a local in their house. This way you can not only make more friends but also, discover the places from an inside point of view. For us, it is an excellent way of traveling.

Maps online and offline
To get the best maps of the cities, download Citymapper. It only works in some cities, so check when you arrive whether yours is covered. If it is, you are lucky! As this app shows you the best ways to move around, the distance, the time it takes and you can use the public transport offline.
Another option, to have the map of the city even when you’re offline, is maps.me. It is an absolute asset when you have no internet. The only thing to remember is to download the map while you still have a connection, so you can use it later.
City Tours and Experiences
The best way to get to know a destination is by walking around with a local that can tell you interesting facts about the place. Getting to the next destination
From Amsterdam to the next destination it takes only 1 hour and 25 minutes by plane (or about 5h45 on the direct ICE train from Amsterdam Centraal) from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Berlin Brandenburg (BER). If an older guide sends you to Schönefeld, ignore it: Schönefeld stopped being an airport in October 2020 and became BER’s Terminal 5, which was closed for good in 2022. From Berlin to Prague you can take the EuroCity train (about 4 hours, every two hours from Berlin Hauptbahnhof) or the bus (about 4 hours with Flixbus from Berlin Südkreuz). Two things to know in 2026: until 12 December most Monday trains are cancelled for engineering works, and since 3 August the long-distance buses in Prague stop on Opletalova street instead of Florenc. 7. Salzburg, Austria
Settled in the foothills of the Alps, Salzburg is presented as a fairytale destinationis. This small city is full of culture and history, famous for being Mozart’s birthplace.
